Groening’s original plan for Marge’s hair was that it would conceal large, Life in Hell-esque rabbit ears. The gag was intended to be revealed in the final episode of the series, but was scrapped early on due to inconsistencies, and also to the fact that rabbit ears would be too fictitious even for The Simpsons. The ears can be seen in a few sprites from The Simpsons arcade game released in 1991.

Scott [Gimple] and I talked a lot about this… I’m sure if Carol had walked in and Karen was doing a crossword puzzle, she wouldn’t have done that. She had to have been very, very, very ill, and the state of the cell made me think that Karen was struggling to stand up, it wasn’t like a brutal takedown. It was a mercy killing, yes.

It’s annoying to wait, your life is already over… You die here. It was good while it lasted. We killed some boredom, didn’t we?
